چکیده

The aim of this paper is to describe the experiments carried out to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of a dynamic-robotic telepathology system for the delivery of pathology services to distant hospitals. The system provides static/dynamic features and the remote control of a robotized microscope over 4 ISDN lines. For evaluation purposes, 184 consecutive cases of frozen sections (60), gastrointestinal pathology (64), and urinary cytology (60) have been diagnosed at a distance using the system, and the telediagnosis obtained in this way has been compared with the traditional microscopic diagnosis. Diagnostic agreement ranged from 90% in urinary cytology to 100% in frozen sections. The results obtained suggest that such a system can be considered a useful tool for supporting the pathology practice in isolated hospitals.

ACCURACY OF INTRAOPERATIVE FROZEN SECTION DIAGNOSIS AND TOUCH IMPRINT CYTOLOGY: STUDY ON 1000 CONSECUTIVE CASES

Frozen section and touch imprint cytology are important diagnostic procedures for surgeons during operation and must be accurate if the patient is to receive maximum benefit. To assess the accuracy of intraoperative pathologic consultation including frozen section and touch imprint cytology during a five year period (1995- 2000), a retrospective survey of 1000 consecutive cases of frozen s...

Fifth generation telepathology systems. Workflow analysis of the robotic dynamic telepathology Component

Background Fifth generation telepathology systems are dual-modality systems (i.e., digital pathology systems) that combine whole slide imaging (WSI) and real-time dynamic robotic telepathology. Hybrid robotic dynamic/static image telepathology systems were the precursors of fifth generation telepathology systems and can be used as surrogates for fifth generation systems in workflow studies [1-4...

Image sampling in static telepathology for frozen section diagnosis.

BACKGROUND A frozen section diagnostic service is often not directly available in small rural or mountain hospitals. In these cases, it could be possible to provide frozen section diagnosis through telepathology systems. Telepathology is based on two main methods: static and dynamic. The former is less expensive, but involves the crucial problem of image sampling. AIMS To characterise the dif...

Evaluating the accuracy of fine needle aspiration and frozen section based on permanent histology in patients with follicular lesions

Background: Fine needle aspiration (FNA) has led to a decrease in unnecessary surgeries for thyroid nodules. This study was designed to compare diagnostic value of FNA and frozen section methods in the follicular lesions. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study based on the medical records of 42 patients who were referred to surgery clinic of Rasool-e-Akram hospital in Tehran with complain...

Three years of experience with routine use of telepathology in assessment of excisional and aspirate biopsies of breast lesions.

AIM To examine the applicability of routine telepathology to accurately diagnose breast lesions. METHODS During a 36 month period, a dynamic telepathology system was used to assess 315 excisional biopsies and 209 fine needle aspirates of breast lesions submitted by surgeons located 20 km from the hospital. The results of the gross and microscopic telepathology diagnoses were compared with fin...
